Child Life Experience

May-August 2016

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center ~ Cincinnati, OH

As a child life intern, I worked with certified child life specialists to continue developing the child life core competencies. My time was primarily split between the cardiology clinic, radiology clinic, and emergency department. I also gained experiences with the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, PICU, NICU, Psychiatric hospital, PICC placements, and transgender clinic. I completed various assignments such as a case study, a final project, a best evidence statement, and activity center planning.

Camp Flying Horse Farms ~ Mt. Gilead, OH

Through my child life internship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, I had the opportunity to be a cabin counselor for teenaged girls with rheumatology and gastrointestinal diagnoses. My primary role during camp involved collaborating with interdisciplinnary staff to help provide normal and developmentally appropriate experiences for campers with special medical needs. I closely observed the function of child life specialists in the medical camp setting and learned the value of child life in alternative settings.

Mt. Washington Pediatric Rehabilitation Hospital ~ Baltimore, MD

Shortly after my practicum student to volunteer transition, a per diem Child Life Assistant position opened and I was offered the position. In my ongoing experience with this position, I independently facilitated therapeutic play among school aged and adolescent patients in order to foster normative psychosocial development and actively advocated for the mission of child life to interdisciplinary staff members and patients’ families. In addition to working directly with patients and families in the facility, I also worked off site with siblings of children with disabilities as a Sibshop facilitator

Mt. Washington Pediatric Rehabilitation Hospital ~ Baltimore, MD

Once I completed my practicum, I sought to continue my involvement with Mt. Washington's facility by transitioning to a volunteer. During my experience as a volunteer, I practiced professionalism in communicating with staff, patients, and families, collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to implement family-centered care, and maintained flexibility in supporting the various practices of CCLS’s.

As a University Affiliated Practicum Student, I spent over the 120 hour minimum requirement collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to implement group therapy, conducting and recording developmental assessments, and implementing age-appropriate play to promote developmental goals. As a dedicated volunteer, I helped to normalize the hospital environment for youth and their families, observed Certified Child Life Specialists provide medical play, and engaged in developmentally appropriate play with hospitalized children.

As a "Kids Klub" attendant, I provided care for children aged 3 months to 12 years old by engaging them in developmentally appropriate play. I also practiced communicating openly and effectively with parents regarding specific wants/needs of their children.
